June on the Farm: Nesting & Nuptials
Hello from the heart of the farm,
The alpacas are soaking up these early summer days—and honestly, so are we. June always brings a steady rhythm of busy tending on the farm: caring for the land, keeping the chickens happy, and getting ready for wedding season. With so much growing and blooming all around us, it’s a great time to pause and share what’s new.
Inez’s Broody Breakthrough
If you’ve ever wondered what it means when a hen “goes broody,” you’re not alone. When a hen becomes broody, she’s driven by a strong maternal instinct to sit on her eggs and hatch chicks. It means she can get quite protective, sometimes even feisty toward other chickens.
Inez, our beloved buff orpington chicken, recently went broody again—the second time she’s done so since joining our farm. Her broodiness was intense: she separated herself from the flock and became quite territorial, even starting to spar with her feathered friends. To give her space to calm down and break her broodiness, we had to separate her for about two weeks.
Good news—she’s finally back to her usual self, rejoining the flock and enjoying her days without the “mom mode” intensity. Broody hens like Inez remind us how wild and wonderful nature truly is, right here on the farm.

We’re celebrating a very special person this month—our land manager, Stella! They’ve been the quiet powerhouse behind the scenes, tending the garden, orchestrating invasive species removal, and helping us move toward a permaculture paradise on the farm.
Stella’s work is transforming this land into something even more vibrant, resilient, and beautiful—and we’re so grateful for their dedication and vision. Please join us in wishing Stella a very happy birthday and sending lots of love their way!
