Greetings friend!
We’re halfway through May and we’ve got farm updates for you. Let’s start with the animals!
Have you met the newest animal to join our farm, Ryan Gosling? We picked up this sweet little goose on a whim and added him to our flock of chicks. We assume he is a male, but we won’t know until he’s matured fully. His purpose will be to alert the chickens if there are predators nearby. Geese won’t actively protect chickens from predators, but they will make a fuss when predators are about, which the chickens will then know to take cover. We’ve had him for about 1 month and he has grown so much. He’s silly and lovable and has quickly become one of our favorite animals on the farm.
Come meet Ryan Gosling when you book a stay with us, or visit for an alpaca experience!
This month was also a big one for the boys. We hosted our first annual SHEARING DAY on our farm! This is a big deal for the boys because their main purpose on the farm is to produce ulta-soft, high-quality, lustrous fiber. We collect the fiber once a year to make fine, finished goods, like blankets, gloves, and hats among other things that you can find in our farm shop.
The boys need their fiber over the winter to stay warm, but when the weather warms up, they can overheat if they aren’t sheared. We have a wonderful symbiosis that creates an equally beneficial situation for all of us. Check out our story highlights or this reel to get a sneak peek at what a shearing day looks like. It is truly a fascinating process!
More on the Farm…
While the weather has been heating up, we’ve been trying to get prepared to garden and grow food this year! It’s been a massive undertaking, but we are making progress. So far, in the garden, we’ve completed most of the chicken area as well as the greenhouse exterior.
Just up the hill a bit, we added a cute little shed that will soon become our on-site farm store!
